Trying a New Artistic Medium: Ohuhu Alcohol Markers!

Good Evening!

“Crab” 8.3″x8.3″ Ohuhu Marker Paper, Ohuhu Alcohol Markers. Original Image from Pexels. 5/12/2026.

Today I got my Ohuhu Alcohol Markers. I’ve been very excited to try these out. I have been seeing tons of artists using these markers for coloring, or illustrative work and I have been really inspired by their work.

I kept with the ocean theme that I’ve had of late, and decided for my first project with the markers, I would draw a crab. I found an inspiring image on Pexels.com, and recreated in my own vision.

These are the colors I used with my drawing above.

What did I learn from my first use of Alcohol Markers?

  • First of all, no matter how much I read to use a ‘light touch’ with the markers, I had a significant problem remembering and implementing that fact. I reverted to childhood crayon marker use, where I liked to press and really push the color into the paper. That is certainly going to be a learning curve for me.
  • Blending, really did elude me a bit. I understood quickly the layer effect of the colors, but as for a smooth blend, I know I need to do some research and probably just keep practicing. This is my first time using these! I need to cut myself a little slack.

Feedback?

  • I haven’t received much Feedback. As usual, I showed my first attempt with my family, and while one said they knew what it was right away, the other did not. Which tells me that I had some trouble creating enough depth and definition in my drawing to make the actual crab stand out.
  • I shared it on my Facebook page as well, however, it will be awhile before I see any results from that image, such as likes and comments, as I just created my Facebook page today.
  • Ultimately, I think for a first attempt it’s pretty good. My subject was not exactly simple, with the colors of the crab blending into the sand colors as well, but I like it well enough.

Let me know in the comments what you think? Have you added Alcohol Markers in your artist’s collection of media? Do you like to try new mediums, or stick to just one? Inquiring minds want to know!
